Three Simple Ingrown Hair Treatment Options

Category: Beauty — Author: Mike Jones

Everyone, at some time or another, has suffered from ingrown hairs. One every now and then is not going to cause too much grief but if you have a serious condition you will need to find a good ingrown hair treatment. Ingrown hairs cause the skin to become seriously irritated. The skin becomes inflamed, red and a rash develops. You may even notice pus collecting under the skin if the hair follicle has become infected.

The best time to treat ingrown hairs is immediately after a bath or shower. The skin is still soft, pores are open and the hair is more likely to be closer to the surface. If you have not just stepped out of a bath or shower use a moist, warm cloth and hold it on the inflamed area for a few minutes.

Use a sterilized needle to gently work the hair out of your skin. You should not have to dig too hard. If it is not coming out easily, then leave it alone and try one of the methods listed below.

Clean the skin using a loofah/sponge and an exfoliating cleanser. Sometimes the hair gets trapped because of excessive oil, dirt or dead skin cells. Gentle exfoliation will help to open the pores. You are exfoliating too aggressively if it leads to bleeding. Mix sugar and honey together to create a natural skin exfoliating remedy. Exfoliate every day to keep ingrown hairs at bay.

Use creams that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. These ingredients help to clean the skin and take off dead skin cells. They help to open up the pores. These ingredients can be found in most acne cleansers. A good natural alternative is witch hazel or tea tree oil.

Do not wax or shave until the ingrown hairs have cleared up. This could lead to more serious infection. Don’t wear clothing that is tight fitting. This aggravates the skin further.

It is hard to keep ingrown hairs from ever reoccurring however you can take some measures to limit their frequency. You should keep your skin well moisturized and exfoliate regularly. Gentle cleansing and moisturizing will help to maintain the skin’s elasticity and keep it soft. Do not shave too close to the skin by applying too much pressure on your razor and try shaving in the direction of the hair growth.
