4 Causes Of Itchy Scalp

Category: Hair Loss — Author: Sarah Parker

Having an itchy scalp is a very common and frustrating problem to have. An itchy scalp can be caused by a number of different skin conditions. Let’s look at a few of the most common causes of this annoying problem.

## The Dreaded Dandruff Problem

Dandruff may be caused by too much hair product, or buildup in your hair. Other factors would be the use of hair dryers, curling irons or coloring products. If you don’t wash your hair enough this can also contribute to the condition. Many people experience the worst dandruff during the winter due to drier air, indoor heating and hats which may be a bit too tight.

Dandruff can have an effect on people with too much hair product on them, or buildup in your hair. It can also happen with excessive use of hair dryers, curling irons or coloring products. Infrequent hair washing could also result in dandruff. Most people suffer from terrible dandruff during winter when the air is driest as well as the indoor heating and too-tight snow caps.

## Contact Dermatitis

Some people tend to get it when they come into contact with poisonous plant like poison ivy. Some other factors that contribute to this problem are soaps, detergents, hair coloring products as well as certain types of food. These types of contact are usually the common cause for this problem.

Another potential cause of this problem is allergic reactions. This happens when our immune system is super-sensitive to some particular types of contact like metals or dyes. It’s important to get down to the root of the problem that is causing the allergic reaction and fix it.

## Psoriasis

This causes a red rash often with a thickening of the skin. This is likely a genetic condition with upwards of 4% of the population suffering from this form of dry scalp. Topical lotions are usually given to relieve the symptoms.

## Head Lice

Very common with children, this louse spreads upon contact and must be cleansed with an appropriate hair wash. Also clothes and bed linens must be washed to remove the lice from the vicinity.

It is difficult to pin point the best hair product or treatment for some of these problematic scalps. Even stress can contribute to problematic scalp. See a scalp doctor and state your concerns to the specialist and find ways to cure it. They may not provide you a quick fix but at least you will be able to put the nasty itchiness and dryness at bay. However, what’s important is that you should never scratch your scalp as it will get worse and may even spread to other areas if you do.
